Russia Launches Massive Air Attacks on Ukraine’s Energy Grid

Russian forces launched a massive combined air campaign against Ukraine’s energy grid, striking power facilities around Kyiv and other regions in the heaviest combined attack on energy sites in months. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that seven people, including a child, were killed in the strikes, which disrupted municipal transport and triggered emergency power cuts across multiple provinces.

Combined Missile and Drone Barrage Targets Kyiv and Regional Grid

The onslaught involved nearly 190 drones and ballistic missiles targeting power facilities primarily in Kyiv and the surrounding region, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Ukraine’s air force reported intercepting 5 missiles and 155 drones during the more than 12-hour air-raid alert that forced residents into shelters. State power grid operator Ukrenergo responded to the extensive damage by imposing its first emergency power cuts since spring across Kyiv and three surrounding regions. The strikes sent thick plumes of smoke drifting across the capital’s skyline, while localized outages brought several tram and trolleybus services to a halt as evening commuters returned home. Prime Minister Sergii Koretskyi stated on X that while attacks on energy infrastructure have occurred daily since summer, a combined strike of this scale has not been seen since the end of last heating season.

Industrial and Port Sites Hit Across Multiple Regions

Beyond the capital, Russian military statements confirmed direct hits on power plants in the Kyiv region, an industrial complex in the Odesa region, and port infrastructure in Ismail in Ukraine’s southwest. Critical infrastructure sustained damage across five regions, with further property damage recorded in five others, Ukrainian officials reported. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko noted that debris was recovered at a Western embassy following the barrage, though he provided no additional details regarding structural impact. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha characterized the synchronized energy strikes as a deliberate effort by Moscow to distract from its grinding, slower-paced battlefield offensive in eastern Ukraine.

Winter Preparations Hampered by Interceptor Shortages

The latest bombardment accelerates what Ukrainian officials and citizens anticipated as a severe winter campaign designed to deprive cities of heat and electricity, mirroring the destructive conditions of the previous winter. Russia has maintained nightly missile salvos to exploit a persistent shortage of Ukrainian air defense interceptors. State weather forecasters warn that freezing nighttime temperatures are expected in Kyiv in the coming days, compounding the urgency for repair crews working to restore generation capacity following the destruction of a key power plant near the capital.
