Obocchama-kun Reborn Anime Announced to Air in Japan in 2027

The India-animated series Obocchama-kun Reborn is scheduled to air in Japan in 2027, TV Asahi announced. The 26-episode production targets children aged six to 11 and serves as a co-production between Japanese broadcaster TV Asahi and Sony Pictures Networks India.

Production Background and Studio Collaboration

Green Gold Animation handles the animation for the series, with Sidheswar Shukla directing. Shinei Animation produces the scenario under the supervision of original manga creator Yoshinori Kobayashi. The project features stories that were not adapted from the original manga alongside new narratives supervised by Kobayashi.

The series will consist of 26 episodes, each running for 22 minutes. In India, the show will broadcast on the kids’ network Sony YAY!. The new project is a continuation of a Japanese-Indian co-production partnership first announced in 2024.

Production Timeline Strategy

Discussing the decision to produce the series in India, Maiko Sumida of TV Asahi explained at the Japanese premiere during the 1st Aichi-Nagoya International Animation Film Festival in December that high demand from India for a sequel could not be met in time if production remained solely in Japan. Splitting the workload—writing scenarios in Japan while producing animation in India—allowed the studios to meet tight scheduling demands.

At the Animation & More Summit in September 2025, Sony Pictures Networks India business head Ambesh Tiwari noted that the original Obocchama-kun anime achieved major success in India during the 2020 lockdowns, driven primarily by localized adaptation efforts that made the show relatable to Indian viewers.

Original Manga and 1989 Anime History

The new series builds on Yoshinori Kobayashi’s original Obocchama-kun manga, which ran in Shogakukan’s CoroCoro Comic magazine from 1986 to 1994 across 24 compiled book volumes. The property previously inspired a 164-episode anime adaptation that aired in Japan from 1989 to 1992.

Chie Kōjiro is reprising the voice role of the protagonist Obocchama-kun from the 1989 anime. The classic upper-class comedy follows the crude heir of the wealthy Obo family as a new student at the elite Denenchofu Academy, interacting with eccentric classmates including Kakino Shuhei, Ojo Samayo, Fukurokoji Kanemitsu, and Binbo Taijo.
