The South Dakota Legislative Research Council is accepting applications for a permanent, full-time Legislative Attorney to provide nonpartisan research, legal drafting, and committee support to the South Dakota State Legislature.
Role and Responsibilities of a Legislative Attorney
A Legislative Attorney assists lawmakers by delivering accurate, objective research and drafting legal instruments. Responsibilities include compiling data for legislative committees, conferring with lawmakers on legal questions, and drafting bills, resolutions, and amendments. Attorneys also staff standing committees during legislative sessions—consulting with chairs to build agendas, gathering testimony, and writing committee reports. Additional duties involve staffing interim committees, reviewing administrative rules for statutory compliance, and authoring issue memoranda for lawmakers and the public.
Qualifications and Professional Requirements
Applicants must hold a Juris Doctorate from an American Bar Association-accredited law school. Candidates must also maintain an active license in good standing with the State Bar of South Dakota, or secure admission to the bar within one year of employment. The position requires strict political neutrality, confidentiality, and the ability to handle sensitive work under tight deadlines. Preferred qualifications include strong writing, research, and analytical skills, along with a capacity to communicate complex legal topics clearly to legislators and the public.
