Victor Ibarbo Joins ASD Calcio San Cataldo After Leaving Pontedera
Former Cagliari and Roma forward Victor Ibarbo has signed with ASD Calcio San Cataldo in the Eccellenza Basilicata division, according to Gazzetta Regionale, just weeks after ending his brief stint in Serie D with Pontedera. The 36-year-old Colombian forward joins the Lucanian club as they pursue a historic promotion under head coach Domenico Giacomarro.
The unexpected transfer brings the former Serie A winger to Italy’s regional amateur tier after a career that included stints in top-flight European and international leagues.
A Rapid Departure From Pontedera
Ibarbo’s time with Pontedera lasted less than a month, as reported by Cagliari News 24. He arrived in Tuscany on September 11, 2026, but departed following a brief run of three substitute appearances totaling 159 minutes without scoring a goal, according to Gazzetta Regionale.
Gazzetta Regionale reported that the sudden exit followed a change in sporting management, with Paolo Giovannini replacing Simone Quintieri, who had originally brought the Colombian forward to the club. Tuttocampo noted that his departure from the Serie D side was finalized through a consensual resolution, quickly opening the door for his move to the Eccellenza division.
Chasing Promotion in Excellence Basilicata
While Tuttocampo highlighted that Ibarbo’s arrival serves as a major boost for the club’s promotion ambitions, his career path has spanned multiple continents since his peak years in Italy. After leaving Cagliari and a loan spell at Roma in 2015, the forward played for Watford in England, Panathinaikos in Greece, Sagan Tosu in Japan, Atlético Nacional in Colombia, and various other clubs before his recent returns to Italian lower-division football.
