A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: Season 1 Finale Recap and Season 2 Preview
The first season of HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has concluded, leaving viewers with a bittersweet ending and anticipation for what’s to come. The finale saw the aftermath of the trial by combat, the tragic death of Baelor Targaryen, and the beginning of a new journey for Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg.
Season 1 Finale: A Tragic Turn of Events
Following a hard-fought victory in the trial by combat, Dunk found himself grappling with guilt after Baelor Targaryen died from a fatal blow during the melee. The accidental death was caused by Baelor’s own brother, Maekar Targaryen. After Baelor’s funeral, Maekar offered Dunk a position in his service, requesting he take his son, Egg, as his squire. However, Dunk, disillusioned with princes, initially declined.
A visit from the ghost of his mentor, Ser Arlan of Pennytree, prompted Dunk to reconsider. He decided to take Egg away from the influence of the Targaryen family, departing against Maekar’s wishes. Dunk honored Ser Arlan’s tradition by nailing a penny to a tree before leaving, with Arlan’s ghost briefly accompanying them before continuing on his own path.
The season closed with Dunk and Egg discussing a journey to Dorne, even as Maekar was shown searching for Egg as their wagons departed, hinting at potential conflict in the future.
Season 2: What to Expect
Showrunner Ira Parker has revealed that Season 2 will adapt George R.R. Martin’s second “Dunk and Egg” novella, “The Sworn Sword.”1 Parker also addressed the show’s title, explaining the playful addition of “of the Nine Kingdoms” was intended to inject a lighter touch into the series.
Parker clarified that the show deliberately focuses on the perspective of Dunk, avoiding deep dives into the storylines of nobles and royalty. While characters from Season 1 may reappear, the narrative will remain centered on Dunk’s experiences.1
Season 2 will continue to be six episodes long, maintaining the format that HBO found successful for the first season.1 The Blackfyre Rebellions will be present as background, informing the characters and lingering resentments within Westeros, but the series will prioritize contained journeys and action-adventure elements.1
