Major Delays on A28 Due to Emergency Repairs

Motorists traveling on the A28 highway in the Netherlands are experiencing significant delays due to emergency repairs necessitated by damage to the asphalt. The disruptions are primarily affecting traffic heading towards Zwolle.

Traffic Disruption and Repair Details

As of today, March 5, 2026, Rijkswaterstaat is conducting urgent repairs between knooppunt Lankhorst and Staphorst, resulting in the closure of two out of three lanes in the direction of Zwolle. The road damage is attributed to a combination of recent frost and general wear and tear. RTV Drenthe reports that these repairs are expected to continue throughout the day.

Extent of Delays

Travelers should anticipate substantial delays. RTV Focus Zwolle indicates that delays of over an hour are already being experienced between De Wijk and Staphorst. Congestion is building on the A32 from Heerenveen, with approximately 30 minutes of extra travel time reported.

Affected Areas and Diversions

The affected stretch of the A28 runs between Staphorst and Nieuwleusen. Rijkswaterstaat has implemented diversions, indicated by roadside signage, to manage the flow of traffic. De Stentor notes significant traffic congestion around Meppel as a result of the repairs.

Ongoing Roadworks on the A28

It’s important to note that other roadworks are currently underway on the A28. Rijkswaterstaat has announced closures between Ommen and knooppunt Lankhorst and between knooppunt Hoevelaken and Nijkerk, extending until March 9, 2026.

Recommendations for Travelers

Motorists are strongly advised to check current traffic information before commencing their journey or consider alternative routes. Allow extra time for travel, particularly during peak hours.
