Curry Barker is following up his breakout horror hit Obsession with a horror-comedy titled Anything But Ghosts, which Focus Features has scheduled for a May 5, 2027 release, konbini.com reported. The project shifts the director away from straight terror and into a story following amateur ghost hunters chasing internet fame who quickly find themselves out of their depth.
Aaron Paul and Bryce Dallas Howard Join the Cast
The film pairs Barker with Cooper Tomlinson, who co-wrote the script and stars alongside him, according to konbini.com. The supporting cast brings in high-profile names, including Aaron Paul of Breaking Bad and Bryce Dallas Howard from the Jurassic World franchise. Violet McGraw, known for her role in M3GAN, and Chris Reinacher round out the primary distribution.
Jason Blum is on board to produce the project, bringing his extensive horror background to the production. Blum’s producing credits include Jordan Peele’s Get Out, M. Night Shyamalan’s Split, and Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man, gqmagazine.fr reported.
The Box Office Success of Obsession
The new movie arrives on the heels of Barker’s second feature, Obsession, which became one of the most profitable independent horror releases in recent years. Produced on a budget of just $750,000, gqmagazine.fr reported that the film grossed $519 million worldwide. In France alone, the film drew 1.8 million admissions despite an under-16 restriction and a cast of entirely unknown actors.
That breakout success has rapidly accelerated the careers of its young leads. Inde Navarrette, who played Nikki Freeman in Obsession, joined the cast of the upcoming X-Men film as Rogue, acting alongside Adam Driver and Sadie Sink, gqmagazine.fr noted. Meanwhile, co-star Michael Johnston is currently filming the fourth installment of The Mummy franchise alongside Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, with a French theatrical release set for October 13, 2027.
Behind the Camera and YouTube Roots
For Anything But Ghosts, Barker steps back in front of the camera to play the lead role, echoing his work on his self-distributed 2024 YouTube feature Milk and Serial. Barker and Tomlinson share a long-standing creative partnership, having previously produced comedic sketches together under the duo name “that’s a bad idea” before breaking into feature filmmaking.
