According to calculations by an expert commissioned by the ADAC, even relatively minor vehicle damage can quickly add up to several thousand euros. The traffic club blames, among other things, the increasingly complex design of modern cars. This has noticeable consequences for insurance premiums. Comprehensive insurance premiums of more than 1,000 euros per year are no longer an exception, even for “normal” vehicles.

For its analysis, the ADAC had three typical damage scenarios calculated for 21 common models: a parking collision at the front left, one at the rear right and the replacement of the windshield after a stone chip. The result: The damage to the front of the vehicle is particularly expensive. If the headlights and bumpers need to be replaced in the example, the calculated costs range from just under 3,100 euros to more than 7,800 euros. Lighting technology is considered a central cost driver. In extreme cases, a single laser headlight costs around 3,300 euros.

A bump at the rear is a little cheaper, as the bumper and integrated sensors have to be replaced. The range here is between a good 2,100 and a good 5,100 euros. In this case too, electronic assistance systems and their integration into complex components drive up the bill.

The ADAC is also critical of the repair specifications of many manufacturers. In many models, repair of damaged bumpers is not planned because repainting is ruled out due to possible sensor malfunctions due to different paint layer thicknesses. Instead, the component must be completely replaced. The traffic club doubts this argument, also because replacement bumpers are often only delivered primed and then painted anyway.

The costs of replacing the windshield appear comparatively moderate. They range from just under 1,000 euros to almost 2,500 euros. But technological change is also evident here: While replacing a window often only cost a few hundred euros in the past, today camera systems for automatic high beam or lane departure warning have to be removed and then recalibrated. This significantly increases the workload and the workshop bill.

The rising repair costs also affect vehicle insurance premiums. According to the comparison portal Verivox, contributions for new customers rose by 16 percent within twelve months between 2024 and 2025. Over a three-year period, the increase amounts to around 50 percent. For many owners, this makes the car significantly more expensive to maintain. Fully comprehensive premiums of well over 1,000 euros per year are no longer uncommon, even for mid-range models.

The development is particularly problematic for older vehicles. Even comparatively minor damage can mean a total economic loss because the repair costs exceed the residual value. This increases the pressure on owners – and on insurers.

The ADAC is calling for manufacturers to rethink their approach. Complex components should be designed so that individual components can be replaced separately. A damaged headlight cover must be replaceable without having to replace the entire light unit for several thousand euros. Constructions that are easier to repair are not only in the interests of consumers, but also more sustainable.
