Dietary Intervention Shows Promise in Managing ADHD Symptoms

Research suggests a link between nutrition and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptoms, prompting ongoing investigations like the 2ndBRAIN study at Wageningen University & Research. This study explores whether a restricted elimination diet can alleviate ADHD symptoms in children aged eight to eleven, offering a potential non-pharmacological approach to managing the condition.

The 2ndBRAIN Study: Investigating the Diet-ADHD Connection

The 2ndBRAIN study is a follow-up to previous research indicating that a strict Restricted Elimination Diet (RED) – consisting of a limited number of ‘safe’ foods – can significantly reduce ADHD symptoms in children. Previous studies have shown that 60% of children experienced a reduction in ADHD symptoms following the RED diet. The current study aims to understand why this diet is effective, for whom it works best and how the effects manifest within the body.

How the RED Diet Works

The RED diet, lasting five weeks, focuses on a limited selection of foods, including rice, turkey, and certain fruits and vegetables. Researchers report a high adherence rate, with at least 95% of families successfully following the diet. The study design involves randomly assigning participants to either the RED diet group or a group receiving omega fatty acid chewable tablets. Following the initial five-week period, children in the tablet group may have the opportunity to try the RED diet under supervision, while those in the diet group may transition to the chewable tablets.

Positive Outcomes Observed in Previous Research

A prior study involving 79 boys with ADHD demonstrated that 63% no longer met the diagnostic criteria for ADHD after five weeks on the RED diet. Improvements weren’t limited to behavior; researchers also observed changes in brain activity, specifically in areas related to impulse control, and alterations in gut bacteria composition. One participant, Floris, experienced significant benefits, allowing him to re-engage in school and reduce reliance on ADHD medication, which previously caused unwanted side effects like tics and appetite loss.

A Family’s Experience with the RED Diet

Floris’ parents reported that his behavioral improvements had a positive impact on the entire family. They had previously tried various interventions without substantial results. Following the diet, Floris was able to participate more fully in classroom activities, and his teacher noted improvements in focus comparable to those achieved with medication, but without the negative side effects. Floris has since excelled academically, completing HAVO with high grades and currently pursuing VWO studies.
