Adidas Unveils 2026 World Cup Away Kits with Return of Iconic Trefoil Logo
Adidas has officially launched the away kits for several major teams participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, three months before the tournament begins. The launch marks the return of the iconic “Trefoil” logo to national team uniforms for the first time in 36 years, last seen during the 1990 World Cup.
A Retro Revival
The collection features over 20 teams, including Argentina, Germany, Spain, and Japan, and draws inspiration from the 1990s with geometric patterns and cultural references unique to each nation. Adidas is revisiting classic World Cup aesthetics through a modern lens, aiming to resonate with both fans and athletes.
Argentina’s Artistic Inspiration
Argentina’s recent away jersey features a black base with blue details and a distinctive blue spiral graphic pattern. This design is inspired by traditional artistic motifs from Argentina’s rich cultural heritage. The kit could be Lionel Messi’s final appearance in a World Cup tournament.
Germany’s Nod to History
Germany’s concept builds upon the visual language of their home jersey, reinterpreting diagonal chevrons as an all-over navy motif. The color palette incorporates tones from different eras of German football history, including a reference to the classic blue cardigans worn in 1954.
Japan’s Symbol of Unity
Japan’s jersey is perhaps the most visually striking, featuring a striped graphic with 12 distinct colors. This represents unity and national connection, both on and off the pitch. Eleven gradient vertical lines cascade down the jersey, symbolizing each of the 11 players on the field, creating a rain-like effect.
Mexico’s Architectural Influence
For Mexico, one of the host countries, Adidas developed a concept featuring a gray graphic on a white base, influenced by “Grecas” motifs found in traditional Mexican art and architecture. The recurring motif represents abstract steps, referencing the stepped exteriors of traditional Mexican buildings.
The Return of the Trefoil
The defining feature of these kits is the return of the Trefoil logo, Adidas’ vintage logo, which hasn’t been prominently featured on World Cup jerseys since 1990. This marks a significant shift for Adidas, bringing a retro aesthetic to the forefront of the tournament.
Tournament Details
