Adidas Hyperboost Edge: A Fresh Era of Max-Stack Cushioning
Adidas is expanding its running shoe lineup with the Hyperboost Edge, a new daily trainer featuring a substantial 45mm stack height and the brand’s innovative Hyperboost Pro foam. Designed to bring the benefits of elite racing technology to everyday runs, the Hyperboost Edge aims to deliver a plush, energetic ride without the demand for a carbon plate. The shoe launches on March 17th in a red and white colorway, with additional options arriving May 1st, and is priced at $200.
A Legacy of Innovation
Adidas’s commitment to running innovation dates back to 1924, when Adi Dassler began crafting spiked shoes. This dedication culminated in iconic moments like Jesse Owens’s four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, wearing Dassler’s footwear. More recently, the introduction of Boost foam in 2013 with the Energy Boost, and its subsequent success with the Ultraboost in 2015, cemented Adidas’s position as a leader in running shoe technology. The Hyperboost Edge represents the next step in this evolution, focusing on a wider audience of daily runners.
Introducing Hyperboost Pro Foam
The core of the Hyperboost Edge is Hyperboost Pro, a PEBA-based foam representing Adidas’s first significant effort to translate elite racing midsole technology into a daily trainer without incorporating a carbon plate. The shoe features a 45mm rearfoot stack height and a 6mm drop, providing a cushioned and responsive feel. Lab testing conducted by the University of Cologne showed that 73% of runners preferred the energy return of the Hyperboost Edge over their current footwear. The shoe’s late-stage rocker geometry further assists toe-off, enhancing running efficiency.
Lightweight Design and Construction
Weighing approximately 9oz for a men’s US 8.5, the Hyperboost Edge is competitive in weight, being lighter than the Hoka Skyward X2 and comparable to the Asics Megablast despite similar stack heights. Adidas prioritized a lightweight design throughout the shoe. The upper utilizes PRIMEWEAVE, a soft and lightweight woven material that provides a secure fit with integrated heel pods for added stability. The outsole features a 2mm thick LIGHTTRAXION rubber compound, offering grip on both wet and dry surfaces.
Design Details
Adidas has subtly updated its design language with the Hyperboost Edge, moving the iconic Three Stripes to the midsole – a first for Adidas running footwear. This design choice highlights the shoe’s key feature: the stacked foam. The initial launch colorway is red and white, with additional color options becoming available on May 1st.
