AerynOS 2026.02 Alpha Released with Desktop Updates and Enhanced Installer
AerynOS, a Linux distribution known for its atomic update workflow without relying on an immutable filesystem, has released its 2026.02 alpha build. This update brings a host of improvements across various desktop environments and enhancements to the installation process.
Key Updates in AerynOS 2026.02
The AerynOS team has focused on refining tooling and infrastructure this month, resulting in a faster and more reliable experience. Improvements have been made to Moss, Boulder, and the Summit dashboard, increasing efficiency and automation.
Desktop Environment Updates
- Cosmic: Updated to version 1.0.8, addressing VLC freezes in applets, removing unsupported actions from the File Manager Recents section, and enabling path copying with the Shift key.
- GNOME: Updated to 49.4, including fixes for Quick Menu focus behavior and default folder reappearance after deletion, alongside numerous other fixes.
- KDE Plasma: Updated to 6.6.1, with KDE Frameworks at 6.23.0 and KDE Gear at 25.12.2. KDE Plasma is now offered as an option during the first-time setup wizard.
Improved Installer Options
The console-only installation option has been significantly enhanced. Previously limited to ‘headless install’ mode using an Ethernet connection, the installer now detects and utilizes Wi-Fi connections, expanding installation possibilities.
About AerynOS
AerynOS is currently in alpha development and utilizes a GNOME-based live environment for installation. Its Lichen installer allows users to choose between GNOME, KDE Plasma, Cosmic, a terminal-only environment, or a custom Wayland compositor setup like MangoWC, Niri, or Sway. The installer always pulls the latest available packages during installation.
The AerynOS 2026.02 Alpha ISO is available for download on the AerynOS download page. Users are advised that, as an alpha release, it is not recommended for production environments.
