Afghan National Accused of Shooting Two National Guard Members Near White House

An Afghan national has been accused of shooting two West Virginia National Guard members close to the White House. Specialist Sarah beckstrom, 20, and staff sergeant andrew Wolfe, 24, were the guard members shot, according to US attorney for the district of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro.

The suspect, identified as Rahmanullah lakanwal, 29, allegedly drove across the country to launch an “ambush-style” attack using a .357 Smith & Wesson revolver. He currently faces charges of assault with intent to kill while armed and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence. Authorities have stated it is “too soon to say” what the suspect’s motives were, but charges could be upgraded, potentially to first-degree murder, depending on the condition of the victims.

Law enforcement officials have revealed that Lakanwal entered the US in 2021 through Operation Allies Welcome, a Biden administration program designed to evacuate and resettle Afghans following the US withdrawal from Afghanistan.

The FBI is investigating the shooting as a potential act of terrorism, with director Kash Patel describing the investigation as “coast-to-coast” and involving multiple search warrants.

The injured guard members had been sworn in less than 24 hours prior to the attack. Ms. Pirro confirmed that their families are being supported with all necessary resources.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser characterized the shooting as an attack on America itself,stating,”Somebody drove across the country and came to Washington DC to attack America,” and vowed the perpetrator would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
