When a Cold Isn’t Just a Cold: A Mother’s Story

Table of Contents

Your child has a cold. Thay all do sometimes. But than it doesn’t go away… And the doctors initially think of pneumonia. But in the end it isn’t. What if your world falls apart and your child turns out to be seriously ill?

This brave mother shares her story.

On Friday, September 1, 2023, we unsuspectingly had another x-ray taken of Liam’s lungs. The “pneumonia” that our son had did not improve. To our horror, we saw two round spheres in his right lung. The hospital couldn’t tell us much, except that it was clear this was wrong. We were referred to the Beatrix Children’s Hospital, where we could go on Monday morning. A weekend full of tension followed, in which we already knew deep down that things were wrong.

On September 4, 2023, our worst nightmare came true. I can still hear the doctor saying: “your son has cancer.” More specifically, neuroblastoma. A very aggressive form of cancer that originates in immature nerve cells.Liam was only three years old.

The Diagnosis and Initial Treatment

The news was devastating. We were thrown into a world of medical jargon, scans, and treatment plans. Liam underwent extensive testing – bone marrow biopsies, MIBG scans, and countless blood tests. The neuroblastoma had already spread, creating tumors in his bones and bone marrow.

treatment began immediately. Liam endured rounds of high-dose chemotherapy, followed by surgery to remove as much of the primary tumor as possible. The surgery was complex and risky, but thankfully, the surgeons were able to remove a meaningful portion of the cancer. After surgery, Liam received radiation therapy to target any remaining cancer cells.

The Fight Continues

even after chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation, the cancer wasn’t gone. Liam needed immunotherapy, a treatment that helps his own immune system fight the cancer. He traveled to the United States for this specialized treatment,a journey filled with hope and uncertainty.

The immunotherapy was grueling, with significant side effects. But Liam remained remarkably resilient, always smiling and finding joy in the small things. his strength and positive attitude inspired everyone around him.

A Glimmer of Hope

After months of treatment, the scans finally showed a positive response. The cancer was shrinking. Liam continued to receive immunotherapy and supportive care, and slowly but surely, he began to regain his strength.

Today, Liam is in remission. He still requires regular check-ups and scans to monitor for any signs of recurrence, but he is living a full and happy life. He loves playing with his friends, building with LEGOs, and spending time with his family.

A Mother’s Advice

“If your child seems unwell, trust your instincts,” says Liam’s mother. “Don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek second opinions. Early detection is crucial. And remember, you are not alone. There are many resources available to help you navigate this challenging journey.”

Key Takeaways

  • Trust Your Instincts: If something doesn’t feel right with your child’s health, advocate for them.
  • Early Detection Matters: Prompt medical attention can significantly improve outcomes.
  • Seek Support: Connect with other families facing similar challenges.
  • Stay Positive: A positive attitude can make a difference in both the child’s and the family’s well-being.
