Agricultural Insurance in Spain Reaches Record Highs in 2025
Agricultural insurance in Spain has achieved unprecedented levels of coverage in 2025, with premiums totaling €1.029 billion – a 1% increase representing a new ancient maximum. This surge in demand underscores the growing recognition among Spanish farmers and ranchers of agricultural insurance as a vital tool for mitigating escalating climate risks and securing their livelihoods. Data released by Agroseguro reveals that approximately 380,000 policies were subscribed during the year, further solidifying the sector’s robust performance.
The expansion isn’t limited to premium volume; the area of land insured has also seen significant growth, reaching 6.24 million hectares – a 5% increase compared to the previous year. Protected agricultural production rose to 42 million tons, marking a 3% increase. Notably, the insured capital has experienced the most ample growth, climbing 6% to €19.332 billion, equalling a record sustained for the eleventh consecutive year.
This increase in insured capital is driven by heightened coverage across a diverse range of agricultural sectors.Crops with established insurance adoption rates,such as extensive herbaceous plants (+9%),wine grapes (+5%),and citrus fruits (+5%),have contributed significantly. Furthermore, sectors with historically lower insurance penetration, including olive groves, nuts, tropical crops, forage, and red fruits, are also demonstrating increased engagement. Livestock insurance also experienced a substantial rise, with a 10% increase in insured capital.
Ignacio Machetti, President of Agroseguro, emphasized the meaning of this continued growth, stating that it reflects the increasing confidence farmers and ranchers have in the agricultural insurance system and it’s ability to provide effective protection against increasingly unpredictable whether patterns and associated risks. The sustained demand for agricultural insurance highlights its crucial role in ensuring the resilience and sustainability of Spain’s agricultural sector in the face of a changing climate.
