Penalty Miss Sparks Criticism After Saudi Arabia Reaches Gulf Cup Final
Saudi Arabia secured a 3-2 penalty shoot-out victory over Qatar on Saturday night, booking a place in the Arabian Gulf Cup final.
Atif Questions Tambakti Over Execution and Responsibility
Speaking on the television programme Dorrena Ghair, Ahmed Atif targeted Tambakti’s execution of the crucial penalty kick. Atif stated that the defender must feel a sense of responsibility toward the national team because the poor execution risked wasting the collective effort of the squad. He argued that Tambakti should not be relied upon in high-pressure situations due to an apparent lack of regular penalty-taking experience.
“I understand the miss itself, as it is something that can happen to any player in football, but executing it in this way is unacceptable,” Atif said on the programme. He contrasted Tambakti’s effort with teammate Mohamed Kanno, noting that Kanno strikes the ball similarly but understands how to execute it properly. Atif concluded that Tambakti needs intensive training on penalty kicks to protect the efforts of his teammates and the technical staff.
Gulf Cup Final Setup
Despite the penalty miss, Saudi Arabia edged the shoot-out 3-2 to advance through the fixture. The national team will now face the United Arab Emirates in the Arabian Gulf Cup final on Tuesday evening.
