The Rise of Agentic AI: Overcoming Operational Hurdles for Enterprise Success

The transformational potential of artificial intelligence is now widely recognized, with enterprise leverage cases gaining momentum as organizations move beyond pilot projects and into full-scale AI production. Many companies are now experimenting with agentic AI, a promising modern level of automation. However, achieving full operational success remains a significant challenge, and widespread enterprise adoption is still elusive.

The Integration Imperative

Without robust data integration, stable automated workflows, and effective governance models, AI initiatives risk remaining stuck in pilot phases and failing to deliver tangible results. The increasing autonomy of agentic AI makes a holistic approach to integrating data, applications, and systems even more critical. According to Gartner, over 40% of agentic AI projects are predicted to be cancelled by 2027 due to issues with cost, accuracy, and governance .

Key Findings from Recent Research

A recent survey conducted by MIT Technology Review Insights, encompassing 500 senior IT leaders at mid- to large-size US companies actively pursuing AI, reveals a strong correlation between a solid integration foundation and more advanced AI implementations. The survey, along with expert interviews conducted in December 2025, highlights the benefits of an integration platform in avoiding duplication, silos, and maintaining oversight as AI workflows grow increasingly autonomous.

Progress in AI Implementation

Despite past reports of limited AI success, the research indicates that three in four (76%) surveyed companies have at least one department with an AI workflow fully in production.

Success with Defined Processes

AI implementations are most successful when applied to well-defined and automated processes. Nearly half (43%) of organizations are experiencing success in this area, although a quarter are succeeding with new processes, and one-third (32%) are applying AI to a variety of processes.

The Need for Dedicated AI Teams

Currently, two-thirds of organizations lack dedicated AI teams. Only one in three (34%) have a team specifically responsible for maintaining AI workflows. For 21%, central IT handles ongoing AI maintenance, while 25% assign responsibility to departmental operations. In 19% of organizations, the responsibility is distributed.

The Power of Enterprise-Wide Integration Platforms

Companies with enterprise-wide integration platforms are five times more likely to utilize more diverse data sources in their AI workflows. 59% employ five or more data sources, compared to only 11% of organizations using integration for specific workflows, and 0% of those not using an integration platform at all. Organizations leveraging integration platforms similarly demonstrate more multi-departmental AI implementation, greater autonomy in AI workflows, and increased confidence in assigning autonomy in the future.

The Agentic Enterprise: A Collaborative Future

The emergence of the agentic enterprise – a business where human employees and AI agents work together seamlessly – is reshaping how businesses operate . Agentic AI is redefining enterprise platforms, installing intelligent virtual assistants capable of analyzing data and making decisions with minimal human intervention . By 2028, organizations embracing agentic AI are projected to achieve cost savings, accelerate product releases, and redeploy talent to higher-value work .

Looking Ahead

As agentic AI continues to evolve, a strong operational foundation – built on integrated data, automated workflows, and robust governance – will be essential for realizing its full potential. Organizations that prioritize these elements will be best positioned to navigate the challenges and capitalize on the opportunities presented by this transformative technology.
