AI and IT Job Outlook 2024-2034: Growth and Decline Trends

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, artificial intelligence and emerging information technology are reshaping the American workforce between 2024 and 2034, driving sharp demand for specialized analytical roles while dampening hiring for routine administrative positions. The federal projections outline significant expansion in computer and mathematical fields, contrasted with steady contractions in clerical and customer support occupations due to ongoing automation gains.

Job Growth Leaders in Data Science and Tech

Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Information security analysts will see an increase of 28.5 percent, yielding 52,100 new positions. Actuaries and operations research analysts are also expected to experience robust growth exceeding 21 percent over the decade.

Software developers represent the largest absolute numeric expansion among technology fields. According to the federal data, employment for software developers will grow by 15.8 percent, translating to an increase of over 267,000 jobs. Computer and information research scientists are projected to grow by 19.7 percent, adding 7,900 positions to the economy.

Contractions in Administrative and Support Occupations

Conversely, the integration of generative AI tools and enterprise software is driving efficiency gains that reduce labor demand in office support sectors. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, procurement clerks face the steepest projected decline, dropping 5,400 positions. Credit authorizers, checkers, and clerks will see a decrease.

Legal secretaries and administrative assistants are projected to decline, shedding 9,000 jobs. Customer service representatives face a reduction, removing 153,700 positions from the labor market. Executive secretaries, general administrative assistants, and medical transcriptionists are similarly projected to experience downward employment trends through 2034.
