Pascal, a 60-year-old engineer who recently relocated to Lyon after a successful career in Canada, was seeking investment opportunities to secure his family’s future. He encountered an online advertisement featuring a video purportedly of Jean Reno recommending a specific investment platform. Attracted by the actor’s endorsement, Pascal proceeded with the investment, unaware that the video was a digitally fabricated deepfake.

According to reports from TF1’s “Grands Reportages,” the deepfake video convincingly imitated Reno’s voice and appearance, creating a false sense of legitimacy. Pascal registered on the platform and was contacted by an individual identifying himself as a trader named “Laurent.”

The Scam Unfolds

The scammers initially allowed Pascal to create a small investment of €250, which appeared to triple in value within weeks, further building his trust. To reinforce this illusion, they permitted him to withdraw €4,000 in purported earnings. Emboldened by these initial “gains,” Pascal invested a substantial amount of money, initially €195,000 from his Canadian savings, and subsequently emptied his family and professional accounts.

The platform displayed a fabricated balance exceeding €1 million, leading Pascal to believe his investments were thriving. However, when he attempted to withdraw his funds, the scammers became aggressive, demanding additional payments to “save” his account.

Devastating Losses and Stalled Investigation

Pascal ultimately lost nearly €350,000. He reported the incident to authorities, and a hacker was able to trace the platform’s creator to India. However, the investigation has stalled, leaving Pascal without recourse. He has not received any updates from the justice system a year after filing his complaint, highlighting the challenges of prosecuting international cybercrime.
