AI Boom to Hit Czech Wallets: Memory and Storage Prices soar

Table of Contents

the artificial intelligence (AI) boom isn’t just impacting stock markets and the American economy; Czech households will soon feel the effects in their wallets. This is due to the construction of data centers, which is driving up global demand for chips and memories, subsequently increasing their prices.

“For the training and operation of AI models, an extreme amount of powerful servers is needed, the manufacturers of which are now buying practically all available production of memories and related components,” says Eliška Čeřovská, spokesperson for Alza.cz, regarding the increase in memory prices.

Other electronics retailers echo this sentiment. “The growing interest in computing capacity for artificial intelligence means that the big players are building new data centers and the demands on memory chips are growing rapidly. We are currently watching the continuous increase in the price of the entire category of external data storage, especially memory cards, flash drives and external and internal drives, both SSD and classic,” explains Dominik Dolejš, head of marketing for Planeo.

The price jump is ample. “The most critical situation is with DDR (memory for computers) and GDDR memory (memory for graphics cards). The capacities of the largest manufacturers are already sold out for the year 2026, and prices are now 100 to 200 percent above the level of autumn 2025,” Čeřovská points out. She adds that manufacturers are prioritizing deliveries for AI servers as they offer the highest prices.

This price increase is gradually being passed on to consumers. “The rise in prices is already underway in some categories – it mainly concerns freely sold PC components, where memories and SSDs are the most exposed. For these items, we monitor price growth every week,” Čeřovská describes. “The situation is slower with manufacturers of complete devices, as they have longer contracts, but the first signals of price increases are already starting to come from them, especially for desktop PCs.” Notebook prices are expected to increase later this year, followed by mobile phones with a slight delay.

Mobile Phone Prices Expected to Rise in 2025 Due to Memory Chip Shortages

Prague, Czech Republic – November 27, 2024 – Major mobile phone manufacturers and retailers in the Czech Republic anticipate price increases for mobile phones in 2025, primarily driven by a global shortage of memory chips. While the extent of the increases varies between companies, the consensus points towards higher costs, particularly for budget-friendly devices.

xiaomi Foresees Price Hikes,Especially in Lower Price Categories

Chinese electronics giant Xiaomi expects the memory chip shortage to translate into higher mobile phone prices next year. According to Xiaomi, the price increases will likely be most pronounced in the lower price segment. This aligns with broader industry concerns about supply chain constraints impacting affordability.

Czech Retailers React to Potential price Increases

Czech retailers are also preparing for potential price adjustments. Planea,a mobile phone distributor, echoes Xiaomi’s sentiment, suggesting price increases will be in the “lower percentage units.” https://www.planea.cz/

HP Tronic Zlín, the parent company of the Datart electronics chain, is taking a more cautious approach. spokeswoman Petra Psotková stated that while they have received signals of potential price increases,it will take time for these changes to be reflected in consumer prices. https://www.datart.cz/ However, Datart acknowledges that even they will be affected by the global trend of large technology companies securing available memory supplies.

Understanding the Memory Chip Shortage

The current shortage of memory chips, specifically DRAM and NAND flash memory, is a complex issue stemming from several factors:

* Increased Demand: Demand for memory chips has surged due to the growing popularity of smartphones, data centers, and other electronic devices.
* Supply Chain Disruptions: Geopolitical factors and unforeseen events (like factory fires) have disrupted the production and distribution of these critical components.
* Limited Manufacturing Capacity: Expanding memory chip manufacturing capacity is a costly and time-consuming process, making it difficult to quickly respond to increased demand.
* Strategic Purchasing by Large Companies: Major tech companies are securing large volumes of memory chips, further limiting supply for smaller manufacturers and retailers.

Impact on Consumers

The anticipated price increases will likely affect consumers across all price points, but those seeking affordable smartphones will feel the impact most acutely. Consumers may need to adjust their expectations or consider alternative brands or models.

Looking Ahead

The memory chip shortage is expected to persist throughout 2025, with potential for easing in late 2025 or early 2026 as new manufacturing facilities come online.Though, the situation remains fluid and subject to change based on global economic conditions and geopolitical developments.

Key Takeaways:

* mobile phone prices are expected to rise in 2025 due to a shortage of memory chips.
* Xiaomi anticipates the largest price increases will affect lower-priced phones.
* Czech retailers Planea and Datart are preparing for potential price adjustments.
* The shortage is caused by increased demand, supply chain disruptions, and limited manufacturing capacity.
