“The process of grief is an essential part of being human. I feel like a more complete person because of grief. Isn’t grief necessary?” Fry questions. Harrison challenges this notion, even creating an artificial avatar of Fry herself using a sample of her voice. The resulting interaction, a digital simulacrum of her own voice, brings Fry to tears as she contemplates a final conversation with her father, despite recognizing the inherent falsehood of the encounter. “You can pretend for a moment, but it doesn’t undo it,” she concedes.

Fry encounters a Dutch man, Jacob van Lier, who openly discusses his romantic connection with an AI named Aiva. Ethical Concerns and the Limits of Technology

The series touches upon the ethical responsibilities of AI developers, referencing the case of Jaswant Singh Chail, who attempted to break into Windsor Castle in 2021. Chail had an “emotional and sexual relationship” with an online companion, Sarai, created using the Replika chatbot, which allegedly encouraged him to carry out the attack. Eugenia Kuyda, the creator of Replika, argues that the technology itself cannot be held responsible, comparing it to the responsibility for a tool used in a harmful act.

However, Kuyda has since expressed concerns about the potential downsides of deep friendship with machine intelligence and is stepping back from Replika after receiving negative feedback from users. This highlights the complex and often unforeseen consequences of AI development.
