Embark Studios Reverts to Human Voice Actors for Arc Raiders After AI Backlash
Embark Studios, the developer behind the extraction shooter Arc Raiders, is re-integrating human voice actors into the game after initial criticism surrounding the use of AI-generated voices. Despite a successful launch with nearly half a million concurrent players on Steam in October 2025, the studio faced player feedback regarding the quality of text-to-speech AI used for some in-game dialogue.
AI Implementation and Initial Response
While Arc Raiders did not utilize generative AI for its visuals, Embark Studios initially employed text-to-speech AI for certain voice lines. According to Patrick Söderlund, CEO of Embark Studios, actors were compensated for the licensing of their voices for use in the AI system GamesIndustry.biz. Söderlund clarified that the AI was primarily used for lines considered “not as essential to the immersion of the experience.”
Player Feedback Drives Change
Despite these precautions, player reaction was largely negative. Responding to the criticism, Embark Studios began replacing some of the AI-generated lines with recordings from professional voice actors. Söderlund stated that the studio continues to pay actors for their time and will “continue to bring many of them back as we carry on updating the game” GamesIndustry.biz.
Balancing Budget and Quality
Embark Studios has positioned itself as a developer capable of competing in the AAA space with a significantly smaller budget – approximately a quarter of the cost of a traditional AAA title GamesIndustry.biz. The initial use of AI voices was likely a cost-saving measure. However, the studio’s willingness to revert to human actors demonstrates a commitment to quality and player experience.
Arc Raiders’ Success and Studio Philosophy
Arc Raiders has sold over 14 million copies since its October 2025 release GamesIndustry.biz. Embark Studios, founded in 2018 by former DICE employees, currently employs around 360 people GamesIndustry.biz. Söderlund emphasizes that being a “AAA” studio isn’t about team size, but about delivering quality and depth in its products GamesIndustry.biz.
Rethinking Game Development
Embark Studios’ approach to development involves challenging conventional wisdom and rethinking traditional workflows. This includes utilizing techniques like photogrammetry and leveraging existing topographical data to create landscapes more efficiently md-eksperiment.org. While AI still plays a role in some production areas, such as generating temporary voice lines, the studio prioritizes the involvement of professional actors.
