Thousands gathered at Mernda railway station in Melbourne on Friday to honor Aidan Becker, a 22-year-old security guard who was fatally attacked while intervening in an alleged robbery and assault. The vigil took place one week after the tragic incident, with Mr. Becker’s family expressing their profound grief and gratitude for the overwhelming community support.
Heroic Intervention
According to police reports, Mr. Becker was attempting to assist a 14-year-old boy who was allegedly being robbed and assaulted with a machete at Mernda station last Friday. He was allegedly attacked by four males, aged between 16 and 18, during the incident. ABC News reports that Mr. Becker was on his way home from The Alfred hospital at the time of the attack.

At the vigil, Mr. Becker’s mother, Natalie, shared the family’s immense pain. “We stand here tonight as a family broken,” she said, through tears. “I don’t know how we heal and I don’t know what tomorrow looks like, but I know that my beautiful boy would have done it all again in a heartbeat because that’s the boy he was.” She extended heartfelt thanks to the community for their outpouring of support, noting the letters, comments, and flowers received.
