Airbnb and LaLiga Partner to Boost Rural Tourism with Andrés Iniesta Experience
Airbnb is strategically shifting its focus towards rural tourism in Spain, initiating a collaboration with LaLiga that features a unique experience with football legend Andrés Iniesta in his hometown of Fuentealbilla, Albacete. This partnership aims to revitalize rural communities and connect football with local culture, addressing criticisms of Airbnb’s role in urban tourism pressures.
A New Direction for Airbnb in Spain
Airbnb has been working to address concerns regarding its impact on housing affordability and mass tourism in popular Spanish destinations. The company has entered into numerous agreements with municipalities and autonomous communities to regulate short-term rentals and ensure compliance with the new Unified Registry of Rentals, promoted by the Spanish Ministry of Housing .
In November, Airbnb launched a three-year “rural commitment” plan, investing $50 million in projects to promote new tourist destinations, support local businesses and revitalize towns in rural Spain .
Iniesta Experience in Fuentealbilla
The collaboration with LaLiga’s first major initiative is offering fans the chance to participate in a casual football match with Andrés Iniesta in the streets of Fuentealbilla, the town where he was born . This provides a unique opportunity to experience the culture and traditions that shaped Iniesta’s career and discover the charm of the Manchegan region.
“I am very excited to open the doors of my town to share such a special moment. Fuentealbilla will always be a part of me, and I am delighted to bring people closer to my roots and show them the streets and corners where I began to dream of playing football,” Iniesta stated .
Reservations for the experience will open on March 2nd through airbnb.com/laliga-iniesta. Selected participants will enjoy a full day on March 14th .
Broader Collaboration Between Airbnb and LaLiga
Beyond the Iniesta experience, Airbnb and LaLiga are developing a collection of experiences designed to give fans insights into the world of football and its connection to local culture . This multi-season collaboration includes a rural development program that aims to connect football, travel, and community .
Jaime Rodríguez de Santiago, General Director for Spain and Portugal of Airbnb Marketing Services SL, emphasized that “Football, like Airbnb, can serve as an entry point to discover places” .
