British Airways Flight Lands Safely at Heathrow After Losing Wheel During Takeoff

London, United Kingdom – A British Airways airbus A350-1000, flight BA274, successfully completed a transatlantic journey to London Heathrow Airport on Tuesday, January 28th, after losing a main landing gear wheel shortly after departing from Harry Reid International Airport in Las vegas on Monday evening. The incident, captured by an airport webcam, showed the detachment of the right rear wheel as the landing gear retracted.

Despite the significant mechanical issue, the flight crew, in consultation with ground technicians, made the calculated decision to continue the approximately 8,000-kilometer flight to London. This decision was based on the assessment that a landing with a reduced fuel load – achieved by burning fuel during the transatlantic flight – and on the well-equipped runway at heathrow would be safer than an immediate return to Las Vegas.

The aircraft landed without further incident after a flight duration of approximately nine hours. The detached wheel was afterward recovered on the Las Vegas airport grounds.Importantly, no injuries were reported among the passengers or crew members onboard.

A British Airways spokesperson confirmed that the Airbus A350-1000 is equipped with six wheels on each of its two main landing gears. The loss of a single wheel, therefore, does not compromise the aircraft’s ability to land safely. The reduced weight of the aircraft upon arrival, due to fuel consumption, further contributed to a safe landing profile.

Reports indicate that the majority of passengers were unaware of the issue until landing or after disembarking. However, some passengers who accessed the aircraft’s Wi-Fi were informed of the incident mid-flight.The captain maintained a calm and reassuring presence throughout the journey, informing passengers of a “minor technical issue” without detailing the specifics of the wheel detachment to avoid causing unnecessary alarm during the long-haul flight.

This incident highlights the robust safety protocols and redundancy systems built into modern aircraft, and also the expertise of flight crews in handling unexpected mechanical challenges. Investigations into the cause of the wheel detachment are expected to be conducted by both British Airways and aviation authorities.
