AJ Styles Addresses Retirement match, Glove Moment, and Potential Future in Wrestling

AJ Styles recently discussed his match against Gunther at the WWE Royal Rumble, and the curious moment where he seemingly re-retired and then un-retired himself by putting his gloves back on, during an appearance on “Your Story? With Stephanie McMahon.”

Gunther defeated Styles at the Royal Rumble premium live event. Following the match, Styles briefly began to remove his wrestling gloves, a gesture often associated with retirement, but then unexpectedly put them back on, sparking speculation about his future.Styles admitted he wasn’t entirely sure why he did it in the moment.

Hear’s what Styles had to say:

On Putting His gloves Back On:

“I don’t know… Never say never, right? That’s the saying. I think everybody’s allowed at least onc come out of retirement. You know? I’m not saying that I’ll do it anytime soon. I’m just saying.”

On a Potential Tag team with His Son:

“Well I mean, what if my son wrestles? The chance to tag with him once? You never know. So there’ll be a time where the gloves will never go back on, and it may be now. but we’ll see.”

On His children’s Interest in Wrestling:

“My second oldest is – I’m working with him now, so he’s in it. And then my daughter, I’ve caught her many a times watching it. And to the point where I was like, ‘Baby, please turn that off. I just came from work.’ So I think they all got a little bit of it. I think once my second oldest takes off, my oldest will probably end up going that way too. And then who knows if my daughter [does].”

while Styles’ match with Gunther was billed as a potential final bout, his comments suggest he isn’t completely closing the door on a return to the ring, notably if the opportunity to wrestle alongside his children arises.
