Mercedes Formula One Real-Time Translation System Deployed in Monza
The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team deployed a real-time artificial intelligence translation solution developed by Akkodis during the Italian Grand Prix in Monza. The system translates team radio communications, race commentary, and event information into more than 50 languages to assist international guests in the team viewing gallery.
Hardware Design and Technical Specifications for Trackside Operations
Akkodis built specialized computing hardware designed to withstand the high temperatures and restricted air flow inside a Formula One garage. The unit delivers more than 4,000 TOPS of AI computing performance while consuming less than 600 watts of power. During the Monza race weekend, the system operated without interruptions. An end-to-end transcription latency of under 50 milliseconds allows the platform to process audio streams directly at the racetrack rather than routing data to remote servers.
Speech Recognition and Terminology Management Models
The technical architecture relies on the AI-Core platform from Akkodis, which utilizes custom speech recognition models to convert audio signals into text. Additional models identify motorsport-specific terminology, driver names, team members, and track sections before translating the content into selected target languages in parallel. An integrated Terminology Manager allows staff to continuously update and verify new or modified technical terms to maintain translation accuracy throughout the racing season.
Broadening AI Applications Beyond Motorsport
Jo Debecker, President and CEO of Akkodis, stated that the crucial factor is bringing artificial intelligence as close as possible to the origin of information and decision-making. The project combines local computing power with specialized language models to reduce language barriers in fast-paced environments. Beyond Formula One, the architecture is applicable to international events, industrial settings, and other scenarios requiring rapid, context-aware multilingual information processing.
