“Former Assistant Principal Accused of Child Abuse in Newport News School Shooting Case”
A previous Assistant Principal has been charged with child abuse in connection to the Newport News School Shooting.
The lawyer representing Ms. Parker has not yet made any declarations regarding the allegations.
Investigation into Security Failures
The charge against Ms. Parker aligns with the punishment of two individuals in Michigan who did not stop their son from committing a fatal shooting at a school. These parents were given jail terms of 10 to 15 years.
This situation illustrates a growing pattern of holding grown-ups responsible for shootings committed by minors. In December, the mother of the 6-year-old boy who shot Deja Taylor, a teacher, was given a two-year prison sentence for neglecting her child. Prior to this, she had already been sentenced to 21 months for drug-related crimes and lying about her drug use.
Accountability for Gun Violence
Ebony Parker, the former assistant principal at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, has been accused of committing child abuse and neglect during a school shooting that took place last year. After a grand jury indictment, Parker now faces eight felony charges, with a potential maximum imprisonment of five years for each charge.
Ms. Parker’s charges stem from an ongoing investigation into security lapses at the school that may have played a role in the shooting. Last year, Newport News’ commonwealth’s attorney, Howard E. Gwynn, asked for a special grand jury to determine the culpability of others in the incident. His office has not yet released any statements about the recent indictment.
