Alan Faena’s Vision for Fresh York: A Cultural Revival in West Chelsea

Alan Faena, the Argentine hotelier known for revitalizing neighborhoods in Buenos Aires and Miami, aims to inject a new energy into New York City. His approach, described as maximalist and dramatic, centers around the Faena New York hotel in West Chelsea, with the goal of reminding New Yorkers of the city’s vibrant spirit.

From Buenos Aires to Manhattan: A History of Urban Transformation

Faena’s first major project began in 2001 in Puerto Madero, a dilapidated port area of Buenos Aires. After selling his fashion brand, Via Vai, and a period of rose cultivation in Uruguay, he envisioned a luxury residential project. He secured the participation of renowned designers like Philippe Starck and Norman Foster, convincing them to contribute to the transformation of the area.1 Within 20 years, Puerto Madero became one of Buenos Aires’ most desirable residential districts.

In 2015, Faena turned his attention to Mid Beach, Miami, another area facing challenges, including corruption. Over a decade, he transformed it into the Faena District Miami, a cultural hub anchored by a luxury hotel that now hosts prominent Art Basel events.1

Faena New York: A Bold Statement in West Chelsea

Faena New York, which opened in September 2025, is located between the High Line and West 18th Street.2 The hotel distinguishes itself with a bold aesthetic, incorporating elements like furs, damasks, and vibrant colors, contrasting with the industrial style prevalent in the surrounding Manhattan gallery area.1

The hotel’s interior features artwork and design elements reflecting Faena’s symbolic universe, including murals by Diego Gravinese and Keith Haring.1 A 12-meter neon yellow mural by Haring evokes New York in the 1980s, while another work by Juan Gatti replicates iconic city landmarks.1

Faena New York is a collaboration with Accor, with plans to develop up to 20 Faena hotels worldwide, potentially including a location in Madrid.1

A Cultural Hub and Redefining Luxury

Faena views his hotel lobby as a “cathedral,” adorned with a mural by Diego Gravinese.1 He aims to create a cultural complex similar to the Faena District in Miami, encompassing restaurants and entertainment venues.

Faena challenges conventional notions of luxury, dismissing it as “a devalued word” often associated with expensive materials and corporate repetition. He believes Faena represents the future of luxury through “the voice of emotion and surprise through light and colors.”1

The hotel features La Boca, a restaurant by chef Francis Mallmann, offering Argentine cuisine with Spanish and Italian influences.1 The Living Room offers nightly live music and crafted cocktails.

Looking Ahead

Faena expresses optimism about the future of New York City, hoping its spirit of growth and innovation will continue. He envisions Faena New York as a space open to all New Yorkers, evolving into a cultural hub for the city.1
