Last year’s edition of the Mestre cultural festival dedicated its entire program to advocating for Trentini’s freedom. According to festival organizers, a special public appeal was launched on September 13, 2025, in the M9 cloister, featuring prominent public figures such as Marco Damilano, Ottavia Piccolo, Annalisa Cuzzocrea, and Pietro Del Soldà alongside festival director Nicola Pellicani. The 2025 event concluded with an address by war reporter Cecilia Sala—who had herself previously been imprisoned in Iran—expressing a collective hope that Trentini would attend the following year’s festival. That aspiration is now realized as Trentini prepares to share his firsthand account.

Focus on Post-Maduro Human Rights

Trentini will discuss his experience during a panel titled “Presos Políticos: il conto aperto dei diritti umani nel Venezuela post-Maduro.” He will appear alongside festival director Nicola Pellicani and Beppe Giulietti, an organizer with the freedom of expression group Articolo 21 who campaigned extensively for Trentini’s release during his imprisonment, as reported by ANSA. Pellicani emphasized that the session serves to shed light on the broader humanitarian crisis in Venezuela, noting that the country suffers from severe economic impoverishment and instability, compounded by a recent violent earthquake.

The Ongoing Crisis of Political Prisoners

Despite prior promises from the United States regarding the release of political detainees in Venezuela, the vast majority remain incarcerated amid a deeply precarious political and social landscape, according to statements from festival organizers reported by ANSA. The September 12 panel will address this unfulfilled diplomatic commitments and examine the ongoing detention of political prisoners in the post-Maduro era.
