The 2026 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta opened on Saturday morning with several minor balloon crashes, a power-line strike that knocked out electricity to 2,000 customers, and a cluster-balloon launch, according to state officials and local reporting.

Seven Minor Incidents Mar Opening Morning

State Police reported seven separate hot air balloon incidents during the opening morning of the annual event, according to an Albuquerque Journal report by James Bennett and Christian Roman. While balloon mishaps happen during the fiesta, Roman noted that seven incidents in a brief window is an unusual string. Surface winds likely played a role in the morning’s difficulties, according to State Police.

One incident involved a pilot attempting to land in the parking lot for AAA Cooper Transportation at 3700 Hawkins NE, according to the Albuquerque Journal. That balloon struck power lines, knocking out service to 2,000 customers in the surrounding area, the Public Service Company of New Mexico reported. William Fitzgerald, 76, of Lubbock, Texas, told the Journal he was piloting that balloon with one passenger aboard. Fitzgerald said he believed they had enough room to clear the lines, but the balloon touched them, producing a loud electrical pop as electricity traveled between the lines through the support cables. Neither occupant suffered an electrical shock, but Fitzgerald sustained a bruised shoulder and elbow while climbing out of the basket as it dragged a short distance.

KOAT reported two additional landing mishaps on Saturday morning. A second balloon clipped a power line near the 3700 block of Hawkins Street NE while landing, while a third clipped a light pole in the Cinemark movie theater parking lot at 4901 Pan American NE, leaving the craft upended. No injuries were reported in either of those landings. Bernalillo County firefighters were also dispatched to an incident near Osuna and Vista del Arroyo NE involving a crash landing and a balloon stuck in a power line, according to State Police.

Jonathan Trappe Launches 94 Helium Balloons

Pilot Jonathan Trappe completed an Up-style flight early Saturday morning, launching 94 helium balloons from Balloon Fiesta Park without a burner or set destination, KOB 4 reported. Trappe spent eight months planning the flight, utilizing 30 volunteers who arrived at 2 a.m. to help inflate the craft. Trappe told KOB 4 that the launch carried high stakes because it involved manned flight under a cluster of helium-filled balloons.

Unlike traditional hot air balloons, Trappe’s cluster flight relies on ballast, dropping sand or water one bag at a time to manage altitude, or popping individual cells to arrest a climb. Trappe lifted off just before 9 a.m. on Saturday, letting surface winds dictate his path toward an unknown landing site.

Community Cleanups Precede the Festival

Ahead of the opening day crowds, hundreds of volunteers and neighborhood associations gathered for the Fiesta Fanatics Cleanup to clear debris from Balloon Fiesta Park, AOL.com reported via KRQE. Alex Bukoski with the Albuquerque Solid Waste Department said the community effort builds city pride and represents an essential part of the preparations required to launch the event each year.
