Rising Alcohol-Attributable Cancer Deaths Over Three Decades
To track these multi-decade trends, researchers analyzed more than 30 years of data sourced from the Global Burden of Disease study. While public health messaging has historically focused on tobacco use, alcohol is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Despite this classification, survey data indicates that public awareness regarding alcohol’s connection to cancer remains low.
"The most surprising finding was the breadth of alcohol’s potential impact across cancer types," said Dr. Chinmay Jani, the corresponding author of the study and chief fellow in hematology and oncology at Sylvester, in an interview with Fox News Digital. Jani noted that while the relationship between alcohol and liver cancer is widely recognized, its contribution to colorectal, esophageal, breast, pancreatic, and prostate cancers is less understood by the general public.
Demographic Shifts and Cancer Types in Adults Under 55
The study revealed notable differences in mortality burdens across age groups and biological sexes. Overall, older adults and men experienced the highest absolute volume of alcohol-related cancer deaths. Among older men, liver cancer accounted for the primary cause of alcohol-attributable mortality, followed by esophageal and colorectal cancers. For women overall, breast cancer emerged as the leading cause of alcohol-related cancer deaths.
However, a distinct pattern emerged among younger adults between the ages of 20 and 54. In this younger demographic, colorectal cancer became the leading cause of alcohol-attributable cancer deaths in men and the second leading cause in women, outpacing liver cancer in both groups.
Public Health Implications and Risk Factors
Because the study utilized retrospective national databases rather than tracking individuals prospectively over time, investigators could not capture every specific drinking habit or control for every lifestyle variable. Consequently, the findings demonstrate a strong epidemiological association between alcohol use and cancer mortality, but they do not prove direct causation, nor do they establish a definitive "safe" consumption threshold.

Because no minimum safe level of alcohol has been definitively established, study authors emphasize that reducing overall consumption can help lower long-term cancer risk.
