While overall cancer mortality rates have declined substantially due to advancements in prevention, early screening, and treatment, alcohol-linked deaths have not followed that downward trajectory at the same pace. According to data analyzed by researchers, overall cancer mortality for women dropped by roughly 29% between 1990 and 2023, whereas alcohol-attributed cancer deaths for women fell by only about 17%. For men, overall cancer mortality decreased by 34% over the same 33-year span, while alcohol-attributed cancer deaths declined by just 14%. Because other causes of cancer mortality have fallen sharply, alcohol now accounts for a larger proportional share of the remaining cancer burden in the United States.
