Steel company Algoma Steel announced on Monday the 1st that it was unable to withstand the impact of high tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump and issued layoff notices to about 1,000 employees. The company, based in Sault Ste. murry, Ontario, employs about 2,700 people, and all of its major customers are in the U.S., so it was hit hard by the 50 per cent tariffs imposed by Trump last summer.
