DeepSeek’s Pointer-CAD Framework Enhances 3D Design with Alibaba’s Qwen 2.5

A new AI-powered framework, Pointer-CAD, developed by Chinese start-up DeepSeek in collaboration with Tencent and the University of Hong Kong (HKU), is poised to improve the accuracy and efficiency of three-dimensional design. The framework leverages Alibaba Group Holding’s Qwen 2.5 large language model to assist designers in selecting specific elements within 3D objects.

Addressing Limitations in Current 3D Design AI

Traditional computer-aided design (CAD) workflows begin with 2D sketches that are then transformed into 3D models. Existing AI methods for 3D object generation often struggle with either excessive computational demands (high token consumption) or a lack of precise entity selection capabilities, hindering complex editing processes. Pointer-CAD aims to overcome these limitations.

How Pointer-CAD Works

Pointer-CAD focuses on enhancing the accuracy of element selection – identifying edges or faces – within a 3D object. By enabling more precise selections, the framework facilitates the generation of complex geometric structures and significantly reduces segmentation errors compared to existing technologies. This is particularly valuable in fields like engineering, manufacturing, and architecture where CAD tools are essential.

Open-Source Availability and Collaboration

The research team, including DeepSeek researcher Liu Wen, Tencent’s Zhao Zibo, HKU professor Ma Yi, and Beihang University student Qi Dacheng, has made the Pointer-CAD approach open-source, with code available on GitHub. This open-source nature encourages community contributions and further development of the framework.

Alibaba’s Qwen 2.5 Model

Pointer-CAD is built upon Alibaba Group Holding’s Qwen 2.5 model. Qwen 2.5 has seen significant adoption, with over 90,000 enterprises utilizing the model since its launch a year ago. Alibaba Cloud reports that companies like Xiaomi and Perfect World Games are integrating Qwen into their products, including AI assistants and game development.

The Rise of Generative AI in China

The development of Pointer-CAD reflects the growing demand for generative AI technologies in China. Data from the China Center for Information Industry Development (CCIID) indicates that approximately 15% of businesses in China are now utilizing generative AI, with retail and telecom companies leading the adoption.

The Qwen series, including Qwen 2.5, is gaining traction, attracting over 2.2 million corporate users through Alibaba’s DingTalk intelligent collaboration platform.
