Amanda Peet Reveals Breast Cancer Diagnosis Amidst Family Loss
Actress Amanda Peet, known for her roles in films like “Something’s Gotta Give” and “Identity,” has publicly shared her recent diagnosis of stage 1 breast cancer. The revelation came in a deeply personal essay published in The New Yorker, detailing a challenging period marked by the simultaneous loss of both her parents.
Peet, 54, discovered the cancer during a routine scan in late August 2025. She had been undergoing regular checkups every six months due to having “dense” and “busy” breasts, which necessitate more frequent monitoring. A biopsy confirmed the presence of a tumor, prompting further investigation with an MRI to determine the extent of the disease. Source
Navigating Grief and Diagnosis Simultaneously
The diagnosis coincided with a particularly difficult time in Peet’s life, as both of her parents entered hospice care. Her father passed away before she could reach him, and her mother was also nearing the end of her life after a battle with Parkinson’s disease. Peet made the difficult decision not to share her cancer diagnosis with her mother to avoid adding to her distress. Source
In her essay, Peet described the emotional toll of balancing her own health concerns with the grief of losing her parents. She highlighted the surreal experience of attending doctor’s appointments and undergoing medical tests whereas simultaneously navigating end-of-life care for her family members.
Positive Prognosis and Support
Upon returning to Los Angeles, Peet learned that her cancer was stage I, hormone-receptor-positive, and HER2-negative. She described feeling a sense of relief at the relatively positive prognosis, noting that it was “happier than I’d been pre-diagnosis, when I was just a regular person who didn’t have cancer.” Source
Peet’s openness about her diagnosis has been met with support from friends and colleagues. Sarah Paulson, a close friend of the actress, shared a heartfelt message on Instagram praising Peet’s courage and vulnerability in sharing her story. Source
Peet is married to David Benioff, and they share three children together.
