Amatori Rugby Capoterra officially launched its 2026/27 sports season on Saturday, celebrating 50 years of club history while preparing its first team for the upcoming national Serie B championship. The campaign officially kicks off on Sunday, October 18, with an away match against Fiamme Oro.
Celebrating 50 Years of Rugby History in Capoterra
Celebrating history from 1976 to today, the club marked its anniversary with an open house event that brought together players, families, and fans. Club President Andrea Cogoni highlighted the transformation of the grounds since 1976, when Rugby Capoterra was revived after a four-year pause. The celebrations featured youth rugby initiatives spanning age groups from U6 to U18, alongside a Rugby Tots motor skills program for children aged two to five.
The official presentation ceremony streamed live on Directa Sport’s YouTube channel, featuring remarks from regional sports and rugby officials. Sardinian Regional Committee President Gianni Atzori delivered greetings on behalf of the Italian Rugby Federation, while club sporting director Gabriele Ambus and youth director Franco Atzori outlined operational targets for the upcoming year.
Serie B Campaign and Group 5 Challenges
The first team enters Group 5 of the national Serie B competition, facing opponents from Lazio Rom and the Abruzzo region. Under the direction of head coach Marcello Garau, the squad began its preparation in July before welcoming the full roster in September.
Sporting director Gabriele Ambus noted that the squad aims to build on last season’s third-place finish, which narrowly missed promotion. To bolster the roster, the club added new players including Ferreira, Torres, and Piazzalunga. The opening fixture against Fiamme Oro serves as an immediate test of the squad’s readiness against one of the group’s strongest opponents.
Expanding Pathways from Youth to Paralympic Rugby
Amatori Capoterra maintains a broad organizational structure that encompasses youth academies, seniors playing in the regional Serie C, and the first team in the national Serie B. The club also supports a paralympic division featuring wheelchair rugby athletes competing in the national Serie A championship, a department presented during the open house by Nicola Marcello alongside dual Italian Paralympic athletics champion Alessandro Cicu.
