Fire Breaks Out in Amsterdam Curtain Shop, One Hospitalized

A significant fire erupted in Amsterdam’s Rivierenbuurt neighborhood early Monday morning, originating in a curtain shop on the Maasstraat. One person was hospitalized due to smoke inhalation and a neighboring residence sustained substantial damage.

What Happened?

The blaze began around 2:45 AM in a shop located on the Maasstraat, quickly spreading to the apartment above, according to a spokesperson from the Amsterdam-Amstelland Safety Region Hart van Nederland. Residents reported hearing a loud explosion prior to the fire’s outbreak NH Nieuws.

Firefighters brought the fire under control around 3:30 AM. A resident of a nearby home was treated for smoke inhalation and transported to a local hospital.

Local Reactions

A local resident described being startled awake by the noise, stating, “You heard sirens everywhere, it was really a big fire.” The resident also noted that the area is typically quiet and that there had been no prior issues reported at the shop NH Nieuws.
