André 3000 and Cathy Moriarty have joined the cast of Netflix’s upcoming live-action series Scooby-Doo: Origins. The series, which is currently filming in Atlanta and slated for a global release in 2027, comes from Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television.
The upcoming show serves as a modern reimagining of the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon, following the mystery-solving group during their final summer at camp. The plot centers on old friends Shaggy and Daphne getting drawn into a haunting mystery involving a lost Great Dane puppy linked to a supernatural murder, alongside the pragmatic townie Velma and a new character named Freddy.
André 3000, legally known as André Benjamin, is returning to the franchise after previously contributing to the music of the 2002 live-action film. Alongside Big Boi as part of OutKast, plus Killer Mike and Sleepy Brown, Benjamin co-wrote the track “Land of a Million Drums” for the original movie. Representatives for the artist confirmed his casting to Billboard on August 27.
Moriarty, known for her Oscar-nominated role in Raging Bull and appearances in Casper, joins Benjamin in an unspecified recurring role. Both actors enter a sprawling ensemble cast led by Mckenna Grace as Daphne Blake, Tanner Hagen as Shaggy Rogers, Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma Dinkley, and Maxwell Jenkins as Fred Jones.
Production is currently underway in Atlanta under the direction of Toby Haynes, who serves as an executive producer and directs the first episode. Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg act as showrunners, writers, and executive producers, sharing executive producer duties with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman, André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, Adrienne Erickson, and Toby Haynes.
Production History and Franchise Connections
Scooby-Doo: Origins represents the second live-action take on the franchise, following the 2002 theatrical feature film and its 2004 sequel. Benjamin’s involvement creates a direct bridge between the early 2000s cinematic adaptations and the new Netflix streaming project.
Beyond his musical career with Outkast, Benjamin brings extensive acting credentials to the project. He portrayed Jimi Hendrix in the 2013 biographical film Jimi: All Is By My Side—earning an Independent Spirit Award nomination—and appeared in features such as High Life, Four Brothers, and White Noise. He also created the animated series Class of 3000, which ran on Cartoon Network from 2006 to 2008.
Moriarty brings decades of film and television experience to the set, with recent television guest-starring credits including Will Trent and Elsbeth.

The production features a large supporting cast alongside its core teenage investigators and the titular Great Dane.
