Andrew Abbott to Lead Reds into 2026 Season on Opening Day

Goodyear, Ariz. – Cincinnati Reds left-handed pitcher Andrew Abbott has been named the team’s Opening Day starter for the 2026 season, manager Terry Francona announced Sunday. The Reds will open the regular season on March 26 against the Boston Red Sox at Great American Ball Park.

A NASCAR Fan’s Surprise Announcement

The announcement came as a surprise to Abbott, who was receiving treatment in the training room when Francona informed him of the honor. Abbott, a dedicated NASCAR fan, had been granted permission to attend the Cup race at Phoenix Raceway following the workout.

“I think it’s awesome. I don’t take anything for granted. I’m honored to represent Cincinnati on that day. I know being there and seeing how big of a holiday it’s celebrated. It’s great. Having the chance with all the teammates, all the talent we have on this team means a lot to me too. Any one of those guys deserve it but I’m excited to take the ball and offer it my all.”

Deserving Choice Despite Greene’s Injury

The selection of Abbott comes as Hunter Greene, the Reds’ Opening Day starter in 2025, is currently sidelined with right elbow stiffness pending test results. However, Francona emphasized that Abbott earned the nod regardless of Greene’s availability.

Abbott’s Rise to Ace Status

Abbott, 26, enjoyed a breakout season in 2025, becoming a first-time All-Star with a 10-7 record, a 2.87 ERA and 166 1/3 innings pitched across 29 starts. His performance marked a significant improvement after overcoming a 2024 left shoulder injury that delayed his start to the 2025 season.

Throughout 17 starts in 2025, Abbott consistently delivered quality outings, allowing fewer than two earned runs. He also recorded one complete game, solidifying his position as a key member of the Reds’ pitching staff.

“I was hurt during Spring Training, late start, just trying to get through healthy and then I kind of turned it really into my best one so far. Obviously build on it, learn from it. It’s a new year. Guys are going to have different approaches and be ready for you. We’re changing as they are. I’m super excited to do that again.”

“You definitely have to enjoy it a little but you have to kind of flirt the fine line. Can’t get too involved in it, can’t let the emotions kind of overtake. You’ve still got to focus, you still have to pitch, you still got to execute. But I’m definitely going to take it in and witness Cincinnati at its fullest on Opening Day and just enjoy it.”
