Focus Features has released the official trailer for Elsinore, a drama directed by Simon Stone that stars Andrew Scott as Scottish actor Ian Charleson. The film charts Charleson’s courageous final months as he faced complications from AIDS while taking on the role of Hamlet at London’s National Theatre in 1989. Following its debut at the Telluride Film Festival and a screening at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the International People’s Choice Award, the film is scheduled for a theatrical release on November 20.
The True Story Behind Elsinore
Written by Stephen Beresford, Elsinore tells the story of Ian Charleson, a star of Chariots of Fire. According to the official production synopsis provided by Focus Features, the film follows Charleson as he accepts the opportunity of a lifetime to replace Daniel Day-Lewis as Hamlet at the National Theatre. Day-Lewis stopped mid-performance during the run, walked offstage, and never returned to the production.
At the time he assumed the mantle of the Danish prince, Charleson was quietly succumbing to complications from AIDS. Despite receiving rave reviews for his stage performance, the actor faced his mortality with wit, grace, and unflinching honesty. He passed away just seven weeks after bowing out of the production, dying in 1990 at the age of 40. His public handling of his illness and final stage appearance significantly shifted the cultural conversation surrounding AIDS at the time.

Elsinore first premiered at the Telluride Film Festival before traveling to the Toronto International Film Festival, where it captured the International People’s Choice Award. Critics have singled out Andrew Scott’s lead performance as a career milestone. Writing in his review for Variety, Owen Gleiberman described Scott’s work as an “indelible journey” that delivers an “astonishingly layered and moving performance.”
Adding to the critical momentum, Variety’s Clayton Davis noted that the feature places Scott firmly at the forefront of a best actor conversation the actor has circled for years.

Focus Features will distribute Elsinore in theaters starting November 20. In the United Kingdom, the film is set to screen as the Opening Night Gala at the London Film Festival ahead of its wider UK theatrical release on January 29, 2027.
