Professional wrestler and musician Andy Williams, widely known in the ring as “The Butcher,” died Saturday after suffering a medical emergency during a tag team match in Millvale, Pennsylvania, according to reports confirmed by TMZ and local event organizers. He was 48 years old.
Williams collapsed in the ring near the conclusion of a match at Mr. Small’s Theater during an event hosted by the independent promotion Enjoy Wrestling, according to a public statement released by the organization. On-site medical personnel administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation immediately before an ambulance transported him to a hospital, where he subsequently passed away, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The wrestling event, which featured Williams and his partner—known professionally as The Blade—battling the team TME, was promptly canceled following the incident, according to TMZ. Officials have not yet released an official cause of death.
Wrestling Career in AEW and Independent Circuits
Williams spent the better part of the last seven years performing in All Elite Wrestling as one half of The Butcher and The Blade.
During their tenure with Tony Khan’s promotion, The Butcher and The Blade feuded with top tag teams including The Young Bucks, FTR, The Lucha Bros., and Jurassic Express. Although they competed as a staple fixture of the early roster, they challenged for the AEW Men’s Tag Team Championship twice before departing the company in June of this year.
Accomplished Heavy Metal Musician Legacy
Outside of sports entertainment, Williams played rhythm guitar for the heavy metal band Every Time I Die. He performed with the band for more than two decades.
