Andy Weir Questions Scientific Accuracy of Christopher Nolan’s ‘Interstellar’
Before achieving best-selling author status with “The Martian” and “Project Hail Mary,” Andy Weir worked as a programmer and, as the son of a physicist, developed strong opinions on science and technology in entertainment. He recently critiqued an aspect of Christopher Nolan’s 2014 film, “Interstellar,” arguing that fixing Earth’s problems would be more feasible than colonizing another planet.
‘Interstellar’ as a Masterpiece
“Interstellar” is widely considered Nolan’s emotional masterpiece, successfully blending his cerebral storytelling approach with heartfelt emotion. The film is notable for its scientific accuracy, aided by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Kip Thorne, who ensured every aspect was vetted by experts. Even when challenged by Neil deGrasse Tyson, Thorne confidently defended the film’s scientific basis.
Weir’s Critique of ‘Interstellar’
Despite the film’s overall accuracy, “Project Hail Mary” author Andy Weir found some plot elements “questionable.” Weir, who has also expressed opinions on shows like “Black Mirror” (deeming it anti-technology) and the Star Trek franchise, believes that colonizing another planet is a more difficult undertaking than restoring Earth’s ecology. In a 2016 interview with the Huffington Post, he stated, “I assure you, though bad the ecology of Earth gets, it’ll always be easier to fix Earth than it will be to colonize another planet.”
Thorne’s Response and Biological Considerations
Interestingly, Kip Thorne had already considered this objection. During a discussion with Neil deGrasse Tyson on StarTalk, Thorne explained that consultations with leading biologists revealed no factual basis to dismiss the possibility of a “vicious generalized blight” that would be incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to reverse. The experts confirmed that such a scenario, while unprecedented, wasn’t outside the realm of possibility.
Accurate Depiction of Black Holes
“Interstellar” did accurately predict the appearance of a black hole. When the first image of a black hole was published by the New York Times in 2019, it closely resembled the depiction of Gargantua in Nolan’s film.
