Angers SCO Faces Scrutiny Over Octobre Rose Merchandise Revenue Transparency
Angers SCO faces public scrutiny and accusations of financial opacity regarding commercial revenues generated from special-edition pink-ribbon campaign jerseys. Over a four-year period, the club has committed to the annual breast cancer awareness campaign through various initiatives, including an all-black jersey worn during an October fixture. However, the Ligue contre le cancer (LCC) has stated that it received zero euros from merchandise sales following the initial rollout, according to reporting by Le Courrier de l’Ouest.
The 2023 Launch and Unprecedented Commercial Demand
The controversy stems from a special project launched in October 2023 while Angers SCO competed in Ligue 2. The club produced an all-black kit exclusively for a match against Bordeaux on October 21, 2023. When supporters quickly bought out the remaining stock in club shops, management ordered additional production to fulfill thousands of preorders, creating a commercial windfall worth tens of thousands of euros.
The LCC, which partnered with the club for that initial campaign, maintains that no agreement was in place for retail distribution. Representatives from the LCC stated to Le Courrier de l’Ouest that their signed convention made no mention of jersey commercialization, which proceeded without their knowledge and yielded no financial return for the charity.
Divergent Charity Partnerships and Financial Traceability
Following the 2023 dispute, the partnership between Angers SCO and the LCC dissolved. The LCC did not renew its convention with the club, citing both the uncompensated merchandise sales and a subsequent shift in the club’s charitable alignment toward the Comité féminin 49, a local association. According to reporting by So Foot, the LCC also expressed broader concerns regarding potential “pink washing” through sports partnerships.
Publicly documented financial contributions from the club remain sparse. So Foot reports that over four years of participation in Octobre rose, just one official donation has been publicly communicated by Angers SCO: a €10,000 check presented in 2025 to the Comité féminin 49, a local association.
Unresolved Questions and Future Campaign Operations
Angers SCO has not clarified the financial tracking or profit margins associated with its Octobre rose merchandise sales, despite repeated press inquiries. Since 2024, the club has expanded its commercial revenue streams during the awareness month by introducing temporary, short-term sponsorships alongside jersey sales.
It remains unknown what portion of the proceeds from subsequent jersey sales directly supports medical research or local cancer support organizations, as the club continues its annual campaign operations without an active partnership with the Ligue contre le cancer.
