Anhaltisches Theater Dessau Receives €12 Million for Renovation

The German federal government is allocating approximately 12 million euros from its infrastructure special fund to finance major renovations at the Anhaltisches Theater in Dessau, according to an announcement reported by MDR Kultur and dpa. The funding will target critical structural repairs on the roof and facade of the historic Sachsen-Anhalt theater house, ensuring the building’s long-term preservation without disrupting ongoing performance schedules.

Federal Funding Targets Severe Structural Damage in Dessau

According to Generalintendant Johannes Weigand, who has led the theater since the 2015/16 season, the venue receives a regular annual budget for maintenance, but current conditions require much larger interventions. The existing building structure has sustained extensive damage that risks worsening through continued weathering if left unaddressed. The federal injection of roughly 12 million euros is designed to tackle these pressing envelope issues head-on, securing the fabric of the landmark facility.

Interior Upgrades and Energy Efficiency Plans

Beyond exterior repairs, the modernization project encompasses significant interior work, including the replacement of the main stage floor. Weigand noted that the roof will be rebuilt to support the future installation of a photovoltaic system, aligning the historic cultural venue with modern energy standards. Because the funding is dedicated to medium-term infrastructure measures rather than emergency interventions, the theater will maintain its normal operations and remain open to the public throughout the construction phases.

City Support and Repertoire Scope

Weigand emphasized that the facility remains in very good overall condition, bolstered by the ongoing partnership with the city of Dessau-Roßlau. Unlike many institutions across the German theater landscape, the Dessau venue receives a dedicated annual operating grant from the municipality for building maintenance, giving leadership direct control over facility upkeep and new acquisitions. The Anhaltisches Theater operates as a comprehensive multi-genre house featuring drama, music theater with opera, operetta, and musical performances, alongside ballet and puppet theater. Accommodating around 1,100 seats, the theater draws roughly 60 percent of its audience from Dessau-Roßlau, while 35 percent travel from surrounding districts and the remainder arrive from further afield.
