Anne Hathaway’s “Burial” Signals Pop Star Turn with Help From Charli XCX and Jack Antonoff

Anne Hathaway is trading dramatic roles for a foray into the pop world. The Oscar-winning actress has released “Burial,” the first single from the soundtrack of the upcoming psychological thriller Mother Mary, and it’s a collaboration with some of music’s biggest names: Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff, and George Daniel of The 1975. The soundtrack is set to drop on April 17 via A24 Music, a week before the film’s theatrical release on April 24.

A “Psychosexual Pop Opera”

Directed by David Lowery (The Green Knight), Mother Mary stars Hathaway as a pop star who reconnects with her estranged friend and former costume designer, played by Michaela Coel. The film is described as a “psychosexual pop opera,” promising a unique blend of drama and music. FKA twigs also contributed original music to the project and appears in the film alongside Hunter Schafer and Kaia Gerber.

Hathaway’s Musical Background

While best known for her acting, Hathaway isn’t a stranger to musical performance. She previously showcased her vocal talents in film adaptations like Ella Enchanted, Rio, and Rio 2, and won an Academy Award for her performance in the 2012 musical Les Misérables, where her rendition of “I Dreamed A Dream” achieved minor chart success.

Charli XCX’s Expanding Cinematic Universe

This collaboration marks another step in Charli XCX’s growing involvement in film. Earlier this year, she released the soundtrack for a remake of Wuthering Heights and starred in her own mockumentary, The Moment. She co-wrote “Burial” with Jack Antonoff, George Daniel, and Anne Hathaway.

“Burial” – Not a Nod to the Electronic Musician

Despite the name, the song “Burial” is not a collaboration with the influential electronic musician of the same name. The track is described as “vibey dance-pop with heavy Ray Of Light overtones.” Pitchfork notes that while Hathaway may not be an established pop star, the song “works just fine.”
