“Rust en Vreugd” Blooms on NPO 1: A New Drama Series Based on Hendrik Groen’s Novel

A new Dutch drama series, Rust en Vreugd (Rest and Joy), premiered on NPO 1 on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at 8:25 PM. The eight-part series, based on the book of the same name by Hendrik Groen, follows Emma, a recent widow who unexpectedly inherits a garden plot at a allotment garden complex.

The Story Unfolds

After the unexpected death of her husband Thomas, Emma discovers he had been on a waiting list for a garden at the Rust & Vreugd allotment garden for years. Despite having no interest in gardening, Emma decides to accept the plot to honor her late husband’s dream and preserve his memory alive. However, she soon finds that the idyllic garden is not as peaceful as it seems, becoming entangled in the complex dynamics of the community. Omroep MAX produced the series.

Meet the Characters

  • Emma (Annet Malherbe): A retired librarian, Emma is described as independent and sensitive. She initially approaches the garden with reservations and preconceived notions about the people who inhabit the allotment complex, but gradually becomes curious about their lives. Malherbe spoke about her character during filming.
  • Sef (George Tobal): A kind and amiable character, Sef is a vegan who is passionate about natural gardening methods. His commitment to his principles sometimes leads to conflicts with his neighbors, but he eventually forms a close friendship with Emma. Tobal portrays Sef in the series.
