Toyota RAV4 Gains Apple Car Key Support, Expanding Digital Car Access
Apple’s digital car key functionality, introduced in 2020, is now available on select 2026 Toyota RAV4 models, allowing iPhone and Apple Watch users to unlock, start, and potentially drive their vehicles without a physical key. This marks a significant expansion of Apple’s automotive ecosystem and a first step for Toyota in embracing the technology.
How Apple Car Key Works
Apple Car Key leverages Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, enabling compatible iPhones and Apple Watches to securely communicate with a vehicle’s locking system. Users can store their car key in the Wallet app, allowing for keyless entry and ignition. Typically, this involves holding an iPhone or Apple Watch near the door handle or placing the iPhone on a designated key reader. The feature also supports remote access and control in some vehicles.
Toyota’s Ultra Wideband Implementation
Toyota is taking a slightly different approach, utilizing Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology for its implementation of Apple Car Key in the 2026 RAV4. This allows for a more seamless experience, potentially enabling hands-free unlocking and starting simply by approaching the vehicle with a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch. To utilize this feature, owners will demand an iPhone 11 or newer (excluding iPhone SE models and the iPhone 16e) or an Apple Watch Series 6 or newer. AppleInsider first reported this detail.
Subscription Requirement
Accessing Apple Car Key functionality on the 2026 Toyota RAV4 requires a Toyota Remote Connect subscription, which costs $15 per month. However, new Toyota purchasers in the United States will receive a complimentary one-year trial of the Remote Connect service. MacRumors highlighted this subscription requirement.
Compatibility and Future Expansion
Currently, the Apple Car Key feature is limited to select trims of the 2026 Toyota RAV4. It remains unclear whether Toyota plans to extend support to other 2026 model year vehicles. Apple’s official list of compatible vehicles has not yet been updated to include the RAV4. 9to5Mac noted that Toyota was added to Apple’s backend database in December, suggesting broader support could arrive in the future.
Requirements for Use
To add and use a car key in Apple Wallet, users need a compatible car and an iPhone XS or later, or iPhone SE (2nd generation), with the latest version of iOS, or an Apple Watch Series 5 or later, or Apple Watch SE, with the latest version of watchOS. Users must also be signed in to their Apple Account. Apple Support provides detailed instructions on adding and using car keys.
Expanding Automotive Support
Apple’s Car Key feature is gaining traction within the automotive industry, with support from over 30 vehicle manufacturers. At WWDC 2025, Apple announced that 13 additional brands would be adding support for the technology. Toyota joins automakers like Audi, BMW, Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo in offering this convenient digital key solution.
