Apple CarPlay to Gain Video Streaming Capabilities with iOS 26.4

Apple is poised to significantly expand the functionality of CarPlay with the introduction of video streaming capabilities in iOS 26.4, building on the foundation laid by the launch of CarPlay Ultra and enhancements to standard CarPlay in iOS 26. The feature, initially revealed at WWDC 2025, will allow users to watch video content via AirPlay even as their vehicle is parked.

Video Streaming via AirPlay

The upcoming iOS 26.4 update is expected to enable video playback from any AirPlay-supported app directly on the car’s display. Developers have already been given the tools to integrate this functionality into their applications, extending beyond the more advanced CarPlay Ultra system. MacRumors reports that a software developer was able to demonstrate the feature within Xcode’s CarPlay simulator.

A dedicated Apple TV app is also anticipated to be included, providing access to shows and movies from the Apple TV+ streaming service and personal libraries, including access to MLS Season Pass. However, the full feature set of the Apple TV app in the final CarPlay release remains unconfirmed.

Safety Considerations and Implementation

To ensure safety, the video streaming feature will only be available when the vehicle is in park. Automakers will need to implement support for this functionality, which may lead to a phased rollout as manufacturers integrate the necessary updates. 9to5Mac highlights that this is a key requirement from Apple.

iOS 26 and the Evolution of CarPlay

The addition of video streaming is part of a broader overhaul of CarPlay with iOS 26, which also includes a new “Liquid Glass” design, customizable UI elements with options for Default, Dark, and Clear icon appearance modes, and new wallpapers. IOS 26 brings widgets to standard CarPlay, allowing users to display information from their iPhone apps directly in their vehicle. Tom’s Guide details these upgrades.

Expected Release Timeline

While the feature is currently in beta testing with iOS 26.4, it is expected to be available to the general public in late March or early April. However, Apple may choose to delay the release to iOS 26.5 or a later update if further development is required. MacRumors suggests this possibility.
