The Apple iPhone Duo introduces Apple to the foldable smartphone market with an October 23 release date and a $1,999 starting price. Unveiled during a product presentation led by Chief Executive John Ternus, the passport-sized device opens to a 7.6-inch display alongside a smaller external screen, positioning Apple to compete directly with established foldable offerings from Samsung and Huawei.

Design and Display Specifications

According to Apple, the iPhone Duo is the company’s thinnest smartphone when unfolded, though it maintains a thicker profile than certain rival devices manufactured in China. When closed, the form factor mirrors a standard passport. Chief Executive John Ternus described the hardware during the launch event, stating, “It’s entirely new and at the same time remarkably familiar. A similar size to your passport, it feels familiar to hold and comfortable to use with one hand.” The device runs on Apple’s A20 Pro processor and features a C2 modem chip.

Battery Performance and Productivity Integration

Power management specifications released by Apple indicate the Duo’s battery supports 24 hours of mixed dual-screen use. The hardware also includes fast-charging capabilities, reaching a 50% charge in approximately 20 minutes. Apple demonstrated the device’s productivity applications during the presentation, highlighting multitasking functions that run Zoom and Slack simultaneously across multiple app windows.

Market Impact and Competitive Landscape

International Data Corporation projects that Apple will capture roughly 40% of the foldable smartphone market by the end of next year, according to figures cited in company materials. Paolo Pescatore, founder of PP Foresight, noted that “Apple’s entry is a serious threat to Samsung, particularly in North America,” adding that Samsung faces a competitor capable of expanding overall category adoption.

Artificial Intelligence and Lineup Pricing

During the presentation, Ternus outlined Apple’s privacy-focused strategy regarding artificial intelligence. “Honestly, trust only goes so far when your data is no longer yours to control,” Ternus said, emphasizing that “Apple Intelligence runs on device whenever it can.” Alongside the Duo, Apple introduced the non-folding iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, priced from $1,199 and $1,299 respectively—marking a $100 price increase over previous generations. Updated AirPods starting at $129, Apple Watch Series 12, and Apple Watch Ultra 4 round out the hardware announcements. Apple shares closed 0.3% lower at $315.34 following the event.
